The journey to the summit of Mount Rinjani offers several trekking routes, each with its own unique challenges and attractions. The two primary routes are the Senaru Route and the Sembalun Route.

1. Senaru Route

Looking for a less arduous trek to the crater rim? The most popular and easiest route for climbing Mount Rinjani starts in the village of Senaru, on the northern side of the mountain, at a height of 600 meters.

You can start climbing in the late morning or early afternoon. How long does it take to climb Mount Rinjani via this route? The trek typically takes 2–3 days to complete, varying depending on your fitness level.

You will start your journey by walking through the lush tropical rainforest, where you may catch sight of the black lutung monkeys, who swing through the trees in the late morning.

Unlike the common macaques who may swarm around rest stops hoping for food scraps, these monkeys are very timid. So, keep your eyes and ears open to make sure you don’t miss them!

2. Sembalun Route

Your trek will start at an altitude of 1,100 meters, where you will be greeted by refreshing air. The Sembalun crater rim trek usually takes 3–4 days to complete.

Unlike the Senaru crater rim route, which is characterized by an enclosed tropical rainforest, the Sembalun route offers an open and expansive trek that allows you to take in the stunning vistas around you.

The first half of the trek is a delight, featuring rolling hills and breathtaking scenery. However, the real test comes as you approach the third post, where you will encounter an uphill gradient of up to 50 degrees.

This section can be challenging, so it’s recommended for experienced hikers. Despite the cooler temperatures at this altitude, it is important to stay hydrated and drink plenty of fluids to avoid altitude sickness.

3. Torean Route

Now, let us introduce you to a thrilling trekking route originating from Torean village. Located just 40 minutes away from Senaru village in West Lombok, this route is well-known among trekkers who want to reach the lake on the same day.

Compared to the routes from Senaru or Sembalun, the trail is flatter, but it’s also longer. However, it’s less physically demanding and allows for a relatively easier trek to the lake.

You will start your trek in the early morning from Torean village at an elevation of 585 meters, and trek for 9–10 hours to reach the lake before dark.

The first leg of the trek takes us through a tropical rainforest, where you will encounter the shy lutung or black monkeys swinging through the trees.
