Dive into the Darkness: Night Diving Tips for Beginners

You’ve probably heard of diving, but what about night diving? This activity might sound weird, if not daunting, as you’re going to dive into the water in the dark.

This unique experience allows you to see underwater life from another perspective. Let’s take a dive into the darkness; here is all you need to know about night diving.

This activity offers an entirely different experience than diving during the day.

If diving in the day allows you to see everything clearly, at night your only source of light will be the beam of your dive light. You’ll have no choice but to focus on what is directly in front of you.

You’ll see that even the site you’ve once explored before has a different vibe at night. Some underwater life forms also only come out at night. If you’re lucky, you might get to see these creatures lurk around where they usually don’t in the daytime.

Importance of Proper Preparation and Knowledge for a Successful Night Dive

Diving in itself is pretty challenging. You’d have to get proper certification to be able to swim to certain depths, and you have to be able to use all the equipment properly.

The reason behind this precaution is safety. If you exceed 40 meters, you will need technical diving skills, including making decompression stops and using different gas mixtures in your tank. This allows you to safely descend and ascend in the water without doing any damage to your body.

However, if you’ve gotten your certification and craved something a little more challenging, you might find yourself interested in doing a night dive.

Before you dive right in, it’s important that you note some differences between diving in daytime versus nighttime. For starters, you wouldn’t have any sunlight for visibility. Swimming around with no flashlight will be like swimming in a void, with no telling which way is up or down.

That’s why you need to come prepared. Take notes on some night diving tips below for a safe diving trip!

Safety Tips for Night Diving

1. Dive One Day Prior

To test the water (ha!), make time to dive a day prior to your scheduled date. This will give you the chance to explore the site in the sunlight, where you’ll learn when you need to adjust your equipment or how much weight you need to have on.

This way, you’ll feel more at ease when it’s time to finally go for the night dive. You’ll at least know the technical aspects you can expect during your actual dive.

2. Bring Your Go-To Equipment

Don’t try using brand new gear during a night dive, bring your usual equipment instead. This will give you a sense of confidence and comfort since you know what to expect.

Even if you’ll find yourself in a dark area, using your tried-and-true gears will feel more like muscle memory.

3. Bring Extra Dive Light

Better to be safe than sorry – you can never know what can happen to your dive light. So it’s better to bring some extra dive lights to ensure that there will be no faulty batteries or problems that you may face in the dark.

4. Strap a Tank Signal Light

Another precaution to take is strapping a tank light (or just a glowstick) to your tank. This allows you to easily locate your group underwater and ensure that you won’t get separated on your descent.

5. Start Just Before the Sunset

You don’t have to go in when the water is completely pitch black. When the sun is about to set, it’s time for you to start gearing up.

The light disappears a lot faster underwater than above it, so even if you jump in before the sun completely sets, you’ll be able to slowly ease into the night dive.

6. Don’t Go Alone and Stick Close to Your Group

There’s safety in numbers. If this is your first night dive, then you should not go alone.

Join a night dive group, preferably one with a guide. This way, you can learn about the different signs and signals used during night dives and emergency protocols. The guide usually knows the best spots to see the creatures that only come out after dark.

During the dive, be sure to stick close to your group. Stay within a few meters from where they are. This guarantees that you won’t get lost and if there’s ever trouble, you can easily ask for help.

7. Enjoy, but Don’t Touch

Last but not least, enjoy the experience. See how different sea creatures move about at night and admire them at a safe distance. Be sure not to touch anything, as they have a fragile ecosystem that can easily be disrupted.
