Entry fee: Rp15,000 (locals) and Rp25,000 (foreigners)

Let’s head off to your first stop of the day, Taman Sari Water Castle. Built in 1758, this site showcases stunning ancient architecture which has a photogenic quality. It just transports you back in time–when the park served as the private garden of the Kasultanan Yogyakarta Royal Family.

Located inside a fortress, Taman Sari features bathing pools and fountains, creating a calming atmosphere with the soft gurgling sound of the water. Other remaining buildings include underground tunnels and an underground mosque which are currently inaccessible to visitors.

With just a few spots to see, it takes only about 30 minutes to get through. But, you can stay longer to soak up the cool air and its peaceful atmosphere.

From Taman Sari, it’s a short 15-minute walk to Sultan Palace (Keraton Yogyakarta)–another great spot steeped in royal history and tradition. It’s a grand complex serving as the royal residence and cultural center. Some areas are open to the public and some are off-limits.

You can go to the museum sections to gain deeper insights into Yogyakarta’s rich history and the Sultan’s legacy. To top it all off, you can also enjoy live traditional dances as well as Gamelan and Wayang performances. These are held every Saturday from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.

Entry fee to Vredeburg: Rp10,000-20,000 (local children), Rp15,000-25,000 (local adults), dan Rp30,000-50,000 (foreigners)

Just next to Beringharjo (600 meters away), Vredeburg Fort–another must-see sight in Jogja– awaits you. This former Dutch fort now serves as a visually stunning museum, providing a perfect backdrop for your photos.

The museum collections currently contain more than 7,000 historical objects, from military equipment to items used by Indonesian Proclaimers. They also have dioramas depicting historical events from the period of Prince Diponegoro to the New Order.

From Vredeburg, you can hop over to Zero Kilometer Point in just 5 minutes. Frequently visited by locals and tourists, it’s an intersection surrounded by some historical buildings left behind by the Dutch.

Here, you can simply take a leisurely stroll down the road while also soaking in the ‘European vibes’. Don’t forget to capture this moment with your camera!

There are also a variety of places to eat, including cafes and restaurants. You can relax, get some coffee, and enjoy a meal after exploring the historical landmark.

Entry fee: Rp25,000 (age 3-10 years old) and Rp50,000 (over the age of 10) for locals | Rp250,000 (age 3-10 years old) and Rp400,000 (over the age of 10) for foreigners

Let’s start your second day with a visit to Candi Prambanan. You really need to start fairly early because as the time goes on the place will get busier. Besides, morning is also the best time to avoid the hottest hours of the day.

It’s just a 45-minute ride from the city center. Once you arrive there, at least spend two hours exploring this impressive structure.

Prambanan Temple is Indonesia’s largest Hindu site built around the 9th century. This site is renowned for its three large temples standing tall at 33-47 meters.

The temples are adorned with intricate carvings telling us the story of the gods and heroes in the past. There are also other smaller temples located about 1 km away from the main ones. You can either walk or save some walking by renting a bike or scooter to reach the area.

Since it’s been quite a busy morning, just take a break from sightseeing before moving on to the smaller temples. There, you’ll find a cafe where you can have a meal while marveling at the beautiful view around.

Good news for you, there is no entry fee to access the village. Here, you can take a walk around the area, watch the craftsmen working, and buy some souvenirs. You will also find Instagram-worthy colorful murals and traditional houses–making them stunning backgrounds for pics and selfies.

Make your visit more interesting by taking a guided tour or workshop, with additional fees. From patchwork and barongsai workshops to village tours, prices start from Rp75,000. If you’re lucky, you can also enjoy some music, dance, and barongsai performances. Just ask the locals for the schedule.

Let’s cap the day with a stroll down Malioboro Street–another must-visit in Jogja. From morning to night, the street is always bustling with locals and tourists alike. As night falls, the street comes more alive with twinkling lights, tent stalls, and loud live music.

Some just hang out with friends while others take a walk, try some food, or even shop for souvenirs. You can stop by to soak up the festive atmosphere or do as the others do.

Besides the street vendors lining along the road, you can also spend your night at Malioboro Mall. Offering a mix of local and international brands, it’s a great place to shop for gifts and souvenirs, including batik, bakpia, and others. Or, you can indulge in a variety of food choices with a stunning night view of the city lights.

3D2N in Jogja: Day Three

Kopi Klotok

Kickstart your day with a hearty breakfast at Kopi Klotok–just a 40-minute ride from Jogja city center. With its relaxing rural atmosphere, you can indulge in delicious food while also marveling at the beautiful scenery of paddy fields and Mount Merapi in the distance.

Kopi Klotok offers an all-you-can-eat home-cooked menu for only Rp13,500. This includes rice, sego megono, as well as lodeh tempe lombok ijo, kluwih, and terong

There are also additional side dishes that go well with the main menu. You can have chili sauce, tempeh, tofu, egg, and chicken. The prices range between Rp1,500-Rp7,500.

For those wanting only to snack, have no worries. You can buy banana fritters and jadah or Indonesian drinks like tea, iced orange juice, klotok coffee, and wedang jahe. It will only cost you Rp1,000-Rp6,500.

Parangtritis Beach

Entry fee: Rp10,000

Once you’re done with breakfast, Pantai Parangtritis will be your next stop. It will take about 1 hour and 20 minutes for you to get there from Kopi Klotok.

Parangtritis is usually at the top of most visitors’ bucket list and it’s not hard to see why. With its long coastline, the beach is packed with lots of fun and thrilling activities.

You can stroll around, take pictures, wade in the water, play with the sand, or fly a kite. Alternatively, you can just sit on the sand, soak up the sun, and enjoy the refreshing view of the crystal blue waters.

Make sure to rent a tent shelter to stay cool in the scorching heat. Also, don’t forget your glasses to protect your eyes from UV rays and shield them against the blowing sand. For a more exciting experience, don’t miss out on trying the Jeep tour and also the horse, ATV, or andong ride.

Parangkusumo Sand Dunes

Entry fee: Rp10.000

Parangkusumo Sand Dunes is another major tourist attraction you can find in Bantul Jogja. This place offers a small expanse of soft sand–making you feel you’re in the desert. It’s such an Instagram-worthy spot.

Here, your adventure will take on a unique form. Instead of just admiring the view, get yourself on a board and then sled down the sand. Think of it as surfing or skiboarding, but sand is the medium–aka sand boarding.

However, you have to bear in mind that Gumuk Pasir Parangkusumo is best visited in the early morning or afternoon. It’s best to avoid visiting during the hottest hours of the day–typically between 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The sand temperatures can become quite scorching.

You can simply visit by Jeep from Parangtritis to have a glimpse of the ‘desert’. Both are located relatively close to each other–around a 3-minute ride or 10-minute walk–and you don’t need to pay the entrance fee twice.

Coming in the afternoon surely will not be a problem if you’re going home late at night. In the meantime, you can pay a visit to other tourist attractions near the dunes, like:

  • Parangkusumo, Cemara Sewu, Pelangi, or Widuri Beach
  • Watugupit Paralayang Hill
  • Gembirowati Temple
  • Langse Cave

Another alternative will be to visit in the morning. After an hour, continue your journey to Parangtritis then make Kopi Klotok your last stop before hunting for souvenirs.

Shopping for Souvenirs
