Best 7 Things to Do in Denpasar, Bali

As one of the world’s most popular destinations, it’s no surprise that Bali sees millions of tourists, many of whom flock to popular areas like Ubud, Canggu, Kintamani, Seminyak, and Kuta, overlooking the capital city, Denpasar. Despite its chaotic motorbike traffic, traditional markets, and shouting vendors, there are a handful of things to do in Denpasar to keep you busy for a few days.

It might not be the best area to stay in Bali–no beach clubs, towering waterfalls, or sweeping rice fields. But you can see the side of Bali most tourists miss. From shopping, visiting temples and museums, to experiencing the true flavors of Bali, Denpasar offers a unique blend of modernity, culture, and great food.

Read through and find the best things to do in Denpasar that make your visit unforgettable!

Things to Do in Denpasar

  • Location: Jalan Mayor Wisnu No. 1, Dangin Puri, Kecamatan Denpasar Timur
  • Entry fee: Rp30,000 (locals) / Rp100,000 (foreigners) plus another Rp100,000 for a guide (optional)

Denpasar might not possess what many tourists would love to see and do when visiting Bali. But there are good offerings of museums, like the Bali Museum, where you can learn about Balinese culture and history.

It’s a small museum with interesting displays of different episodes in Balinese history, from ancient artifacts to more modern collections. The big draw, though, is the architecture of the buildings.

It’s so captivating that walking through the area is arguably more interesting than the actual exhibit. Plus, there are not a lot of visitors, so you can have the opportunity to fully immerse yourself in the rich Balinese culture.

  • Entry fee: Rp30,000 (locals) / Rp100,000 (foreigners)

At first glance, some people can be put off by the chaotic streets. But that’s not to say that there are no interesting things to do in Denpasar.

Just like any other area in Bali, monuments are really worth seeing when staying in Denpasar. One that you cannot miss is the Bajra Sandhi Monument.

Constructed in 1987, the impressive stone structure symbolizes the Balinese struggle for freedom and independence. With open spaces, locals consider it the perfect setting for a relaxing stroll and exercises–walking, jogging, and even playing soccer.

Inside, you can find a museum showcasing dioramas and exhibits about Bali’s past and independence movements. And, what’s more? There is a tight winding staircase leading to an observation deck–offering stunning views of the capital city.

3. Visit Sakenan Temple

  • Location: Jalan Pulau Serangan, Sesetan, Kecamatan Denpasar Selatan
  • Entry fee: free

Located on a tiny island of Serangan, just south of Denpasar, Sakenan Temple is a beachside sanctuary known for its tranquil atmosphere. It’s not only a place of worship, but also a perfect spot for a spiritual escape in the middle of a very busy city.

But, of course, Sakenan Temple gets crowded during festivals like Kuningan Day. During this festival, you can see yellow decorations as well as locals wearing traditional clothes, performing rituals, and sharing traditional food. It’s just so festive and sacred.

While you are visiting, also take some time to try seafood on the nearby beach. From grilled fish, shrimps, rujak kuah pindang, to bulung, this spot serves up the locals’ favorites at an affordable price.

If it’s a place frequented by locals you are looking to visit, Denpasar is packed with them. The city is famous for its endless street food options, including those at Sindhu Night Market.

In fact, you can make this your daily visit as it is easily accessible by road, and it has so many stalls to try that you can easily eat for a whole week without exhausting all the options. This is certainly one of the most exciting things to do in Denpasar you shouldn’t miss.

For a small market, Sindhu Night Market is tidy and clean with a great variety of food and drinks. Expect items like nasi campur, bakso, nasi goreng, grilled chicken, nasi Padang, satay, martabak, and more!

The best part is that the food is mostly cooked on the spot while you wait, yet the price is quite reasonable, much less expensive than that at cafes or restaurants. You can expect to spend an average of Rp30,000-Rp60,000 on a dish.

Located just a short distance from Denpasar city center, Mall Bali Galeria is a classic favorite for shopping and dining in Bali without burning a hole in your wallet. With open spaces and greenery, the ambiance is relaxed and welcoming.

Here, you can find almost everything you need at very reasonable prices–daily groceries, clothing, beauty items, electronic gadgets, household essentials, restaurants and cafes, a kids’ play zone, a cinema, and a bowling alley–to name a few. • Location: Jalan Cemara, Desa Sanur, Kecamatan Denpasar Selatan
  • Entry fee: free

There are so many reasons why a visit to Sanur Beach is one of the best things to do in Denpasar. It might not be the prettiest beach in Bali. But, it is certainly a great place to watch the sunrise within the city area–making it an ideal place to relax before or after your flight.

Sanur Beach is east-facing, so if you are an early bird, head to the beach and catch the first light of the day, which is truly magical. What makes it even better, you will find plenty of coffee shops and restaurants in the area where you can have breakfast while watching the sky transform into shades of gold, pink, and orange.

The allure doesn’t stop there. Sanur Beach is known for its long beachfront promenade with stunning ocean views and a peaceful atmosphere. You can walk, jog, cycle, or simply find a quiet spot to enjoy the scenery.

  • Location: Jalan Tukad Punggawa, Serangan, Kecamatan Denpasar Selatan
  • Entry fee: free (any donation for the turtles is highly appreciated)

Located away from the busier tourist areas, TCEC is a must-visit for nature and wildlife enthusiasts. It’s an educational center run by volunteers dedicated to protecting, rescuing, and rehabilitating sea turtles.

The place is a bit small. But still, it will be a meaningful and heartwarming experience, especially if you are in Bali with kids. Upon arrival, take your time to explore, see the turtles up close, and ask questions to the host, who will gladly provide you with fascinating insights into the lives of turtles.

The best part? Only if you are lucky enough to visit on a hatch day, you can adopt and release a baby turtle into the ocean. This takes a short boat ride and costs you Rp250,000 in total–Rp80,000 for the boat ride and Rp150,000 for the turtle.
