You might’ve heard of Bali’s very own Kuta Beach, but did you know that Lombok also has its own Kuta?
Lombok is an island in the province of West Nusa Tenggara. It’s located not too far from Bali, only separated by the Lombok Strait.
Tourists who are looking to escape the crowd of Bali often end up going to Lombok, which also offers picturesque beache. On top of that, there’s a lot of exotic savannas to explore.
Lombok’s Kuta is now one of the island’s up-and-coming tourism hot spots. Here’s all you need to know about Kuta: an overview of the beach town, why it should make it to your destination list, and five awesome things you can do in Kuta, Lombok!
An Overview of Kuta Lombok
The island is home to the new Mandalika MotoGP circuit. To welcome the 2021 MotoGP, the government spent their budget on various infrastructure and accommodations.
As Kuta is one of the areas that received the support, the town now has brand new resorts and more fun activities you can do during your stay.
Kuta has multiple beaches worth visiting. With white sand stretching across its beach line, the beaches are surely a sight for sore eyes.
From the popular Tanjung Aan Beach to the hidden gem that is Seger Beach, you’ll always be greeted with the sight of clear blue waters and the most pristine coves and bays.
Aside from the beaches, Kuta is also the site of one of Lombok’s biggest ceremonies. Locals, specifically of the Sasak tribe, held the Bau Nyale ceremony annually. They would gather on the beach to collect as many nyale worm as possible.
It’s best to visit Lombok between May to June, as it will be mostly sunny yet not too hot outside. Nature will be much greener as well, spoiling your eyes with only the best view.
You can get to Lombok either by plane or boat. From the airport, it’ll take around a 20-minute drive to get to Kuta.

Why You Should Visit Kuta Lombok
Now that you’ve had a glimpse of Kuta, you know that Kuta is home to various picture-perfect landscapes and rich culture as well as traditions to learn about.
On top of that, since the town is relatively small, it allows you to go around by foot or motorbike and meet fellow travelers easily.
Other than that, the price is fairly reasonable compared to Bali, where the price has been purposely driven up for tourists in some areas.
If you’re still unconvinced, though you should check out all the activities you can do in Kuta, below!
5 Awesome Things to Do in Kuta Lombok
1. Watching the Sunset
Witnessing the sun setting on the horizon can give us a sense of tranquility like no other. If you’re looking for this special moment, Kuta is a great place to find it.
The first spot to go to is Bukit Merese. You’ll have to hike to get to the best sunset-watching spot, but it’s all worth it because you’ll arrive on a hill overlooking Tanjung Aan Bay with the perfect sunset as the backdrop.
The next spot would be the one just opposite of that hill, that is on Bukit Seger. The hill is significantly smaller, so you won’t have to walk far to get to the best viewpoint. Aside from the pretty sunset, you’ll also catch a glimpse of Elizabeth Beach from the top.
2. Surfing
Whether you’re a beginner or a pro, Kuta is a great spot for surfing. You can get some lessons at Selong Belanak Beach where the waves are pretty tame. After that, you can even get some grilled fresh fish caught directly by the local fishermen.
If you’re looking for a more advanced surfing spot, you should go to Mawi Beach. The waves are pretty big, offering a challenge for anyone looking to conquer them.
3. Snorkeling & Diving
If you love water activities and have a keen fascination with marine life, then you should never miss the opportunity to snorkel in Kuta.
The Secret Gilis, a collection of islands in southern Lombok, is a perfect spot for snorkeling. If you book their day tour, you’ll be swimming in the crystal-clear water, spotting some exotic fishes, and even feasting on some fresh seafood.
Alternatively, you can go diving if you’re craving for a more in-depth (no pun intended) exploration. Join one of the many diving schools in Kuta during your stay, and get close to untouched reefs and the ecosystem surrounding them!

4. Relaxing by the Beach
For those craving some lazy time, relaxing by the beach can also be heavenly. This is your cue to put on your bathing suit and simply relax on the many of Kuta’s beautiful beaches.
Tanjung Aan Beach is perfect if you’re looking for a beach with white sand and turquoise waters. You’ll be able to enjoy this view while sipping on fresh coconut water sold at the shacks along the beach.
Alternatively, you can take a relaxing swim on Mawun Beach. It’s pretty secluded, so you’ll be away from the crowd and all the noises.
5. Learning About Local Sasak Tribe
Are you looking for an authentic cultural experience during your stay? If so, book a trip to one of the indigenous local villages such as Beleq or Sade Village. You’ll be able to learn their way of life, history, and even learn how they make their woven huts.
If you visit at the right time, you’ll even be able to partake in the Bau Nyale festival. It’s usually held on the 20th of the 10th month of the Sasak tribe’s very own calendar.
The festival has an interesting origin too. Legend has it that Princess Mandalika once received many marriage proposals, but she refused them all for fear that a war would break out among her suitors if she were to approve of one.
However, two suitors were offended, then threatened to destroy the kingdom if she continued to not want to marry them. The distraught princess then sought guidance from God. Through her dreams, she was told to plunge herself into the sea and turn into nyale.
Before doing so, she said that she only wanted peace and that it was her fate to turn into nyale. She asked for people to enjoy nyale together every time it’s in season–hence why the ceremony is being held every year in Kuta.
