Must-Visit Destinations in Banyuwangi

  • Address: Pt. Perk. Lidjen, Kalianyar, Licin District, Bondowoso Regency, East Java
  • Entrance Fee: IDR20,000 (weekdays), IDR30,000 (weekend)
  • Opening Hours: 2 AM – 10 AM
  • Distance from Bobocabin Kawah Ijen: 2.7 km (<15 minutes by car)

When it comes to Banyuwangi’s must-visit destinations, Kawah Ijen almost always tops the list, especially for adventure seekers. And it’s no surprise! This spot is world-famous for its rare blue fire phenomenon, one of only two in the entire world.

The whole experience feels almost mystical. Imagine starting your hike in the dead of night, guided by a starry sky. By the time you reach the summit, dawn begins to break, revealing a breathtaking scene: a massive turquoise acidic crater lake, golden sunrise views, and, of course, the elusive blue fire that can only be seen in the darkness.

You’ll also get a glimpse of local sulfur miners at work. Just make sure to bring a mask, because the fumes can be pretty strong. And don’t forget to snap some cool photos along the crater rim. Take it from Bob, it’s a moment worth capturing!

Whatever you plan to do here, pack warm layers like a jacket and scarf, since it gets really chilly at the top. Hiking boots or sturdy footwear are essential for navigating the rocky and sometimes slippery trails. If you’re a beginner, it’s best to go with a local guide.

The best time to visit Ijen Crater is during the dry season (around May–October), when the trail is less slippery. Plus, from July to September, the clear skies give you the best chance to witness both the blue fire and the magical sunrise!

  • Entrance Fee: IDR7,500
  • Opening Hours: 8 AM – 4:30 PM
  • Distance from Bobocabin Kawah Ijen: About 1 hour and 30 minutes by car

Step into De Djawatan Forest in Benculuk Village and you’ll feel like you’ve wandered straight into a fantasy movie set, think Lord of the Rings vibes!

Here, rows of giant rain trees (trembesi), some centuries old, grow close together with towering branches and sparse crowns. Their trunks are wrapped in moss and epiphytes, adding to the enchanting, almost magical atmosphere.

In the late afternoon, rays of sunlight filter through the leaves, creating a dreamy glow paired with a cool breeze. It’s the perfect backdrop for chilling under the shade or snapping some Instagram-worthy shots! If you’re more into outdoor fun, you can rent a bike (around IDR50,000/hour) and cycle through the forest paths, or even try rafting along its small river.

Planning a visit? Wear comfy shoes and casual clothes, and don’t forget your camera. And of course, show respect to nature, no picking or damaging the iconic rain trees. For the best experience, come in the morning or late afternoon when the sunlight isn’t too harsh!

  • Entrance Fee: IDR10,000
  • Opening Hours: 7 AM – 5 PM
  • Distance from Bobocabin Kawah Ijen: About 2 hours 36 minutes by car

Pulau Merah Beach is the perfect showcase of Java’s tropical charm. Picture soft brownish sand stretching at the foot of a small hill, with turquoise waves rolling in. As the sun sets, the hill glows red, creating a stunning contrast against the orange sky. Surely a second-to-none unforgettable view!

Surrounded by lush green hills and tropical forest, the beach has a fresh, breezy vibe that makes it an ideal spot to unwind. And if you’re up for some fun, there are plenty of activities to try! Love challenges? The waves at Pulau Merah are popular among surfers, great for both beginners and pros.

For a different perspective, hike up the nearby green hill to take in the sweeping ocean view, or hop on a local fisherman’s boat to the small island offshore, where you can go snorkeling among fish and coral reefs.

Not in the mood for water sports? No worries. You can still have a blast just chilling here by sunbathing on the sand, playing a round of beach volleyball, or strolling along the shoreline as the sun dips below the horizon.

Before you go, pack the essentials: sunscreen, a hat, and plenty of water to stay cool under the strong sun. If you’re planning to surf, don’t forget to bring a wetsuit and beach sandals, and always check the waves for safety!

Bangsring is a true water paradise in Banyuwangi, bursting with colorful coral reefs. Well, no wonder, it’s actually a coral conservation area managed by the local fishermen’s community!

One of its highlights is the Rumah Apung, a large floating gazebo out at sea where you can snorkel or visit the shark sanctuary. Feeling adventurous already? You can even swim with friendly blacktip reef sharks under the guidance of trained instructors, safe and unforgettable!

Thanks to its crystal-clear waters, snorkeling and diving here give you front-row views of Banyuwangi’s rich marine life. Beyond that, you’ll also find plenty of fun activities like canoeing, banana boating, hopping on a glass-bottom boat, or booking a trip to nearby Tabuhan and Menjangan Islands. Prefer a slower pace? Just relax on the beach or join the local fishermen for a laid-back fishing session.

The best time to visit Bangsring is during low tide (around 10 AM – 2 PM), when underwater visibility is at its best. Don’t forget to bring a change of clothes, a hat, and your own snorkeling gear if you have it. And remember: always follow your guide’s instructions and respect the ocean.

If you plan on swimming with sharks, stay calm and avoid touching them. The same goes for the coral reefs. You can look, but don’t disturb. After all, protecting nature is what keeps Bangsring magical, right?

  • Address: Krajan Hamlet, Sarongan, Pesanggaran, Banyuwangi Regency, East Java 68488
  • Entrance Fee: IDR7,500 (includes access to Meru Betiri National Park)
  • Opening Hours: 8 AM – 4 PM
  • Distance from Bobocabin Kawah Ijen: About 3 hours by car

Looking for a Banyuwangi escape with pristine white sand, dramatic rocky cliffs, and lush tropical forest? Then you’ll fall in love with Teluk Hijau Beach!

With relatively calm waves, the beach is safe for both swimming and snorkeling. Close by, you’ll also find a seasonal waterfall about 8 meters high. During the rainy season, the water gushes down beautifully, adding another layer of fun to your beach day.

Getting to Teluk Hijau does take a bit of effort, since the road isn’t the easiest. You can reach it either by 4WD/motorbike via Sarongan (through a rugged forest trail) or by boat, only about a 45-minute ride from Rajegwesi Beach.

Both routes offer their own thrill: taking a boat lets you admire the coastline from afar, while the land trek gives you a taste of forest adventure, complete with the chance to spot wildlife along the way. Which one is your choice?

If you’re planning a visit, wear sturdy trekking shoes since you’ll be walking on unpaved paths. Bring insect repellent and a flashlight if you’ll be exploring the forest, and most importantly, always respect nature. Don’t litter and take care of the surrounding forest while you’re here!

Osing Kemiren Tourist Village

  • Address: Krajan Hamlet, Kemiren, Glagah, Banyuwangi Regency, East Java 68432
  • Entrance Fee: IDR20,000
  • Opening Hours: 7 AM – 5 PM
  • Distance from Bobocabin Kawah Ijen: About 48 minutes by car

Known as the “cultural heart of Banyuwangi”, Osing Kemiren Tourism Village (or Kemiren Village) is where tradition truly comes alive. Walking through its narrow streets, you’ll see rows of authentic Javanese stilt houses, and you’ll hear locals conversing in the Osing language, a cultural heritage preserved through generations.

If you visit during harvest season, you’re in for a special treat. Farmers celebrate with Gandrung dance performances in the rice fields, while women pound rice to the rhythm of drums and angklung music.

Beyond that, the village is buzzing with traditional art forms. At the community hall or local studios, you might catch Gandrung dances, Burdah performances, Angklung Paglak shows, or even readings of ancient lontar manuscripts by village elders. On Fridays through Sundays, there are usually mini Gandrung performances staged for visitors, so you’re almost guaranteed to experience the magic!

Even better, you can join in! Try hands-on workshops like making Osing batik, playing gamelan, or pounding Kemiren’s famous local coffee, Kopi Jaran Goyang. And when hunger strikes, don’t miss the village’s signature dish: pecel pitik, a legendary mix of rice, vegetables, and chargrilled chicken.

When visiting, be sure to respect local customs: remove your shoes before entering traditional houses or joining activities, dress modestly, and always ask before taking photos. And of course, leave everything as you found it so future visitors can enjoy the same authentic experience!

  • Opening Hours: 8 AM – 4 PM
  • Distance from Bobocabin Kawah Ijen: About 2 hours 23 minutes by car

Visiting Alas Purwo National Park feels like stepping into an ancient Javanese jungle!

Picture this: towering trees, dense rainforest, and rare wildlife all around you. If you’re lucky, you might spot wild banteng, langurs, deer, leopards, or a variety of exotic birds.

One of its most famous spots is Plengkung Beach (G-Land)—a world-class surfing paradise known for its powerful waves. Beyond the surf, the beach also boasts soft white sand and rows of beautiful pine trees, making it a must-visit even if you’re not catching waves!

But the adventure doesn’t stop at the shoreline. You can trek to Goa Istana or Pura Giri Salaka for moments of peace in nature. In the southern area, you’ll also find Japanese caves from World War II, as well as sacred Hindu temples hidden deep in the forest that are popular pilgrimage sites.

For the best experience, plan your trip in the dry season (around April–October) when the forest trails are less muddy. Pack essentials like a hat, hiking shoes, insect repellent, and enough food and water.

If you’re hoping to spot wildlife, it’s best to go with a local guide or forest ranger for both safety and insights. And most importantly, don’t smoke or litter here, so the forest can stay pristine for generations to come!

  • Address: Krajan, Tamansari, Licin, Banyuwangi Regency, East Java 68454
  • Entrance Fee: IDR100,000
  • Opening Hours: 6 AM – 6 PM
  • Distance from Bobocabin Kawah Ijen: About 32 minutes by car

If you’re looking for a blend of art and nature, Taman Gandrung Terakota is one of Banyuwangi’s most unique attractions. Set against the terraced rice fields at the foot of Mount Ijen, the park is home to over 1,000 terracotta statues of Gandrung dancers scattered across the fields.

But that’s not all! You’ll also find scenic trails surrounded by rolling hills, coffee plantations, durian trees, and even an open-air amphitheater perched at 600 meters above sea level. From there, you can enjoy sweeping views of Mount Merapi, Raung, Meranti, Suket, and Ijen in the distance. Talk about a photo spot!

The amphitheater regularly hosts mini Gandrung dance shows every Friday to Sunday, and it’s also the stage for the annual Jazz Gunung Ijen Festival, a vibrant cultural event you won’t want to miss. For even more inspiration, pop into the nearby painting and photography galleries.

When visiting, wear trekking shoes since the rice field paths can get muddy, and bring a hat to protect yourself from the midday sun. To make the most of your trip, come in the morning or late afternoon when the light is softer. And remember, respect the art installations by not climbing on the statues or damaging the plants around them!

Grand Watu Dodol

  • Address: Grand Watudodol Rest Area KM. 15, Jl. Raya Situbondo, Parasputih, Bangsring, Wongsorejo District, Banyuwangi Regency, East Java 68453
  • Entrance Fee: IDR5,000 (entry), IDR25,000 (snorkeling)
  • Opening Hours: 7 AM – 5 PM
  • Distance from Bobocabin Kawah Ijen: About 1 hour 20 minutes by car

Why is this beach called Grand Watu Dodol? The story is simple. Right by the roadside stands a large black coral rock shaped like dodol (a traditional sticky rice cake). Next to it, you’ll find a Gandrung statue with a welcoming “Selamat Datang” sign greeting every visitor.

The vibe here is super laid-back, shaded by plenty of coconut trees along the shoreline. You can relax by the beach, or hop on a fisherman’s boat for a short sail into the open sea.

Nearby, a small hill awaits with a historic tomb and a tiny shrine at its peak. Climb up and you’ll be rewarded with majestic views of the ocean, the iconic Watu Dodol rock, and the lush forest surrounding the area. There’s also a freshwater well here that locals believe holds healing properties!

Interested in visiting? Aim for the morning or late afternoon when the weather is cooler. Bring beach sandals since the sand can get pretty hot at midday. If you’re hiking up the hill, wear proper shoes and tread carefully, even though the path has been shaped into stone steps!
