According to history, the Dutch constructed this fort under the guise of being a defensive structure to safeguard the sultanate of Kraton. However, the Dutch intended to use Fort Vredeburg as a means of policing any changes that took place inside the palace.

Now, this fort is used as a museum that stores various Indonesian historical relics, including dioramas, miniramas, documents, kendils, and typewriters.
