Shaped like a sideways cashew nut, Sumba Island has a unique coastline on the southeast and southwest part of the island.

This allows for great waves suitable for surfing. You can find waves with various difficulties, be it for beginners or professional surfers.

The surfing zone is basically divided into two: west and east. The western breaks are the more popular zone now, as it is located in a more developed part of Sumba.

The majority of the surfers will likely hang out in the west part, so you’ll meet a few other surfers. It’s the perfect spot to make friends or find a mentor if you’re a beginner.

However, if you’re looking for emptier beaches, then you can visit the eastern breaks. You can enjoy great waves and surf to your heart’s content without worrying about the crowds.

Best Surfing Spots in Sumba

1. The Office

You definitely wouldn’t mind staying here from nine to five. Not only does this white-sanded beach have a picturesque view, but it also serves as a surfing paradise.

The Office is a great surfing break suitable for intermediate surfers and up. You can enjoy some mellow and slow-moving walls on this spot.

The blue water will also refresh and free you from any burden you carry—it’s a free-spirited zone to lose yourself in!

2. Marosi

The Marosi beach gives way to a reef break that allows A-frames on both the left and right. During the peak season, though, it can be quite challenging to perform duck dives in the absence of a good channel.

3. Occy’s Left

Located just in front of the famous Nihiwatu Resort, this surf break is one of the most fantastic surfing spots in Sumba.

You will get access to God’s Left because it has a godly spinning hollow section that mellows out into a wall. Another great thing about it is the chance to admire the reef and its rich marine life.

4. Miller’s Rights

This very popular and rare Sumba gem is accessible only by boat. The wave is great for intermediate surfers; you can stick closer to the inside part and catch the wave when it fattens out and loses hollowness.

There are so many ways to play around in this wave that you can’t help but want to come back for more.

5. Racetrack

You can guess by the name; Racetrack is the faster section of surf break just in front of the Kalala Beach. It offers a great drop then right into a pull-in section where there’s not too much room for maneuvering.

So if you’re looking for something fast to get your adrenaline pumping, then Racetrack belongs to your must-visit surfing spot list!
