About Tegalalang Rice Terrace

To understand the beauty of the rice field, we have to look at the history behind those perfectly carved steps. The scenic backdrop is surely beautiful, as it is a functional agricultural marvel. The Tegalalang rice terrace utilizes an ancient Balinese irrigation system known as Subak.
Passed down through generations since the 9th century, Subak is practically a water management system that is drenched in philosophy. It embodies the concept of Tri Hita Karana, which emphasizes harmony between humans, nature, and the spiritual world.
When you gaze out at the rice field, you’re actually looking at a UNESCO World Heritage site landscape that has fed local communities for over a thousand years. The intricate canals and bamboo pipes ensure that every farmer gets their fair share of water, creating a cooperative ecosystem that is as socially beautiful as it is visually stunning!
Entrance Fee & Opening Hours

Planning your visit to the Tegalalang rice terrace? Here is the practical stuff you need to know to keep your trip smooth and stress-free:
- Entrance Fee: As of early 2026, the standard entrance fee for international tourists is around Rp25,000 to Rp50,000. Keep some small change handy, as some of the deeper paths managed by local farmers might have small "donation" posts to help maintain the bridges and trails.
- Opening Hours: Officially, the area is open from 7 AM to 6 PM. However, since it is a natural outdoor space, you can often arrive earlier to catch the sunrise.
- Parking: There are several parking lots along the main road. Expect to pay around Rp5,000 for a motorbike and Rp10,000 for a car.

Morning walk

Nothing beats the tranquility of a morning trek through the paddies. Start early before the heat kicks in and the crowds arrive. You can hike all the way down to the bottom of the valley and back up the other side. It’s a bit of a workout, really, the steps can be steep and muddy, but the view from the "other" side looking back at the road is spectacular!
Zip lining
Want a bird’s eye view? Several spots around the terrace now offer zip-lining experiences! It’s a quick adrenaline rush that lets you glide over the palm trees and rice stalks, giving you a perspective of the valley that you just can't get on foot.

Bali swing

You’ve seen it on your feed, and yes, it’s just as fun in real life! The Bali Swings at Tegalalang are iconic. Suspended high above the terraces, you’ll feel like you’re flying over a sea of green. Most swing operators provide safety harnesses, and some even offer "dress rentals" so you can have those flowing fabric shots against the emerald backdrop!
Photography hunting
For the shutterbugs, Tegalalang is paradise! Get your professional DSLR or just your smartphone ready, then play with the incredible light and shadow. Look for the best spot, or better yet, find a quiet corner where a local farmer is working with their traditional farming hats (caping) for a more authentic shot!
Dining with a view
After all that walking, you’ll definitely be hungry, right? The ridge overlooking the terraces is lined with cafes and warungs. Grab a fresh coconut or a plate of Nasi Campur and sit on a balcony overlooking the valley. Watching the wind ripple through the rice plants while you sip a cold drink is the ultimate Ubud vibe that you must try!

Best Time to Visit Tegalalang Rice Terrace
Timing is everything when it comes to getting that perfect "Green Bali" experience. Here’s your cheat sheet to visit the paddies at the best time!
Best time of the day
Go early! Bob cannot stress this enough. Arriving between 7 AM and 8.30 AM allows you to beat the tour buses and the midday sun. The light during the "Golden Hour" (just after sunrise) filters through the palm trees beautifully, creating a misty, magical atmosphere. Plus, it’s much cooler for hiking!
Best time of the year (harvest time!)
Always remember that the look of the terraces changes depending on the planting cycle. Here’s Bob’s pro tip:
- The "Greenest" Phase: If you want that lush, neon-green look, visit in March, April, September, or October. This is when the rice is growing tall!
- Harvest Time: Usually occurs around June and July. During this time, the fields turn a beautiful golden yellow. While it’s not the "classic" green, it’s a culturally significant time to see the farmers hard at work harvesting the grain.
- Note: Right after harvest (August or December), the fields may be brown or filled with water as they prepare for the next planting. It’s still beautiful, but different!
